Governor Signs Bill Expanding Dental Services For Children In Underserved Areas
Florida Governor Rick Scott signed SB 580 this week, legislation that allows dental hygienists in under served communities to provide services to patients under 21, and to allow those services to be covered by Medicaid.
State Representative Rene Plasencia (R-Orlando) had filed the companion legislation in the house and was happy to see it signed into law.
“What you’re seeing is a lot of parents going to the emergency room when it’s too late. It’s very burdensome and very costly to the taxpayers.” said Plasencia “This is a great bill because it provides that care for kids.”
The legislation had the support of Plasencia’s colleague, Fred Costello (R-Ormond Beach) who is a dentist and after some initial resistance from some of the dental organizations was able to garner enough support for easy passage in both chambers.
“This was a great example of how members can work together, even if there on opposite sides in the beginning, to make sure what is in the best interest of our constituents is the final product and that’s what we did” concluded Plasencia.
